How Rami Malek became the best dressed man in Hollywood

As a first time Oscar nominee, 37-year-old Rami Malek is enjoying his moment to shine. In the past month, he's taken out a BAFTA, Golden Globe and Screen Actors Guild Award for Best Actor for his role as Freddie Mercury in Bohemian Rhapsody, evolving into a style icon along the way.

His sartorial presence has been years in the making, but it's largely thanks to his stylist Ilaria Urbinati (who sits among the Top 25 best in Hollywood right now), that Malek has cosied with some of the best luxury fashion houses in the world including Givenchy and Dior Homme.

He's wooed everyone from Burberry to Berluti, while Sandro and Calvin Klein are his go to brands and there's the occasional thrift find too.

Urbaniti – who used to dress Bradley Cooper and has a clientele list that includes Donald Glover and Tom Hiddleston – opts for a cool vintage modernism when it comes to Malek. He's in check pants one minute, splashes of velvet the next and a gingham Dior country inspired blazer at the American Music Awards that saw him make the Best Dressed list last year.

Clothes maketh the man

"I have always liked dressing up," says Malek.

"It's an extension of what you put out there and it feels good. I am more confident to get on with the day when I look good," he says.

Malek says his obsession with fashion began as a teenager raiding his sister's wardrobe.

"I was the kid in school [Notre Dame High School] always getting my trousers tapered," he says.

"I always took my older sister's school shirts and wore them – she attended before I went there. I liked hers because they looked more vintage and it fitted with my style.

"But seriously, I have always had an interest in clothing. Now, having an incredible stylist makes it easier because I get to work with someone who totally gets my approach to fashion," he says.

Show stopping style

It was at last year's Met Gala, when he rocked an scene-stealing red Dior suit,  that he cemented his status as a man other men should look to for their style inspirations.

"I actually saw a red corduroy suit at the Dior show in Paris and rang them straight after with an order for one," he recalls.

"When it arrived, it was way too heavy in texture to wear in May for the Met Gala. It also wasn't as formal as I had hoped it would be, so I reached out to them again and they sent me the red suit. And that was it, I feel in love with it," says Malek.

He landed his first Dior campaign in 2017 – a huge coup for a guy who has been wearing the brand regularly since 2015.

"I never dreamed as a kid that I would get to represent that iconic brand," he grins.

"I also love what Kris Van Assche is doing at Berluti," he adds.

"I have become friends with Kris, he's great. At one point during the making of Bohemian Rhapsody I asked him to design a Freddie Mercury costume, but he was busy designing a line of fashion for the entire universe.

"I tried to make it happen though, you don't know unless you ask."
