Louis Vuitton's menswear artistic director Kim Jones might live in Paris, but he's been lured to exotic island life for the latest SS18 collection.
To mark the occasion, the luxury French fashion house has opened a Bondi pop-up to spread the message of love, peace and sartorial understanding.
Wooed by the hippy rev of a Volkswagen Kombi, a custom-made Louis Vuitton van was unveiled at the pop-up's official opening party in Sydney last night – complete with Hawaiian motif print on the exterior.
LV teamed with a young Sydney photographer Gab Scanu to capture the Kombi on the streets of Bondi Beach.
Scanu is renowned for his aerial and drone photography and has more than 326K followers on Instagram. His work speaks for itself – beautifully curated beach and cliff top imagery presented in a cinematic sweeps.
It wasn't the first time the university dropout got a call from Louis Vuitton's Paris headquarters. He worked with the brand a year ago when asked to take two Sydney beach aerial shots to be hung in their Sydney store.
His images of the Louis Vuitton Kombi van tie in what you find in the latest menswear collection –summery cues of Hawaiian motif shirts, bum bags and scuba diving and surf fabrics for pants and shirts.
The focus is on the urban island dweller with new leather goods, surfboards, watches and ready to wear items available for his next destination.
Up in the air
Scanu's giant leap of faith into aerial photography [he is self-taught after all] saw him land on his feet and has now worked with other clients like Google and Samsung. He is the son of a film director and cinematographer who first picked up a DSLR camera at the age of 12.
"Dad used to have a camera rental business and I learned the ropes from him," says Gab Scanu.
"I have also been lucky to travel overseas from a young age. Mum is from the UK and we would go back every year or so and it made me want to explore and be adventurous. Dad's work in film and commercials also inspired what I do."
Scanu says his commission involved taking photos of the customised Kombi Van and surfboard on Bondi Beach.
"I got up really early a few days ago to get a great shot of the Kombi with the sunrise," he explains. "There were beautiful rays of golden coming out from the clouds and I brought those colours up to play on the vibrant and poppy palette of the van."
The exclusive pop-up trades from January 17 to February 4 at the Louis Vuitton Westfield Bondi location.
The men's collection will drop in their flagship stores in Melbourne and Sydney soon after.
