Samsung Galaxy Alpha is ready to fight the iPhone 6

Apple hasn't even announced the iPhone 6 yet, but Samsung is already poised to attack it with a new smartphone design: the Galaxy Alpha.

The Samsung Galaxy Alpha, which has been rumored for a while, has excellent specs as well as a new design that brandishes a chamfered metal edge, just like the current iPhone 5S.

The one feature that doesn't make sense on its own is the screen size; Samsung opted to give the Galaxy Alpha a 4.7-inch HD (1,280 x 720) display, which is a little on the small side when stacked against today's flagships like the LG G3 and Samsung's own Galaxy S5.

However, it looks like a more logical choice when you factor in rumors about the coming iPhone 6, which is predicted to have a 4.7-inch display as well.

Samsung's mobile product designs are becoming more directly comparable to Apple equivalents, seen most recently — and plainly — in the company's iPad rivals, the Galaxy Tab S tablets.

Apple is also rumored to have another size iPhone in the works, of course, a 5.5-inch "phablet" iPhone, but Samsung has more than enough plus-size phones, including the coming Samsung Galaxy Note 4, to take on any biggie iPhone that comes to pass (and it may be a while).

The Galaxy Alpha has most of the bells and whistles that first appeared on the Galaxy S5, including a download booster for combining Wi-Fi and LTE connections to transfer files quickly, an Ultra Power Saving Mode that can squeeze every last watt-hour out of the battery, and a fingerprint sensor built into the home button.

The display is a SuperAMOLED screen, and the 12-megapixel camera in back can even capture 4K video (at 30 frames per second). It's powered by an octa-core processor (quad 1.8GHz and quad 1.3GHz) and ships with Android 4.4.4 "KitKat."

The phone will be available in five pretentiously named colors: Charcoal Black, Dazzling White, Frosted Gold, Sleek Silver and Scuba Blue. No word yet on the launch date or countries.
