The coolest sunglasses for men this summer

Great style starts from the top down. Meaning, you should pay as much attention to the selection of your sunglasses as you would your suit - right down to the fit and shade of the lens.

Under the unforgiving Aussie sun, your average pair of sunnies as as much a safety necessity as they are a statement of aesthetics. While knowing that you're getting the appropriate amount of UV protection is important, it's equally imperative to find a pair that actually suits your sense of style.

A colourful view

One of the biggest trends to hit the shelf this season has been the reintroduction of coloured lenses reminiscent of the '70s.

Gucci in particular has been going strong on this look, teaming them with oversized frames that look deliberately disproportionate.

Amber, blue and even pink are the shades to keep a literal eye on.

Solid framework

For a period there, it was all about the metal – lightweight and streamlined. But this summer, heavier looking acetate has worked its way to the forefront of designs.

Yves Saint Laurent's signature black frames are a good starting point - there's a good reason why the French designer favoured this style and that's because it suits every occasion and face-shape.

A more streamlined version released by the Kingsman + Cutler and Gross collaboration is ideal for those who want something less dramatic but with all the same sartorial impact.

Take to the skies

To say the aviator has come back in style does this classic shape a disservice - it never goes out of style.

But this summer, brands such as Prada and Ermenegildo Zegna have stamped their own take on the design by tweaking the proportions.

Alternatively, if you're a purist, invest in a pair of Persols – an icon so good Steve McQueen swore by them.
