The Ferrari you buy when all your friends have Ferraris

Inspired by racing Ferrari barchettas of the 1950s, the new Ferrari Monza SP1 and Monza SP2 are all about sleek and swoopy open-top styling and exclusivity.

Each is powered by a potent 603kW 6.5-litre V12, the latest limited edition Ferraris have been created as part of limited edition series called Icona.

As suggested by their monikers, the SP1 seats just one person, while the SP2 does away with the tonneau cover to allow for a (lucky) passenger.

The F1 experience

Designers took advantage of the roof- and window-less racing inspiration to create a seductively sculpted shape that infuses retro cues with modern touches.

Small doors open upwards as part of the head-turning looks.

An emphasis on light weight means the body is made of carbon fibre, helping with a claimed 0-100km/h time of 2.9 seconds.

Owners will get some of the Formula 1 experience if they exploit the 300km/h-plus top speed, something guaranteed to unseat even the most expertly presented coiffure.

Not that they'll be experiencing the full forces of the elements.

Gentleman-inspired

Ferrari has engaged luxury brands Loro Piana and Berluti to create a driving outfit tailored to the car. It included "gentleman-driver-inspired" racing overalls, helmet, gloves, scarf, shoes and jersey.

Ferrari Australasia CEO Herbert Appleroth confirmed "a handful" of the 500 Monza specials that will be produced globally will come to Australia, satisfying the demands of enthusiastic local collectors.

Pricing has not been announced, but overseas estimates suggest each has sold out for more than US$1 million.

Add in Australia's controversial luxury car tax, import duty and GST and you're unlikely to see change from $2 million.

For that, you'll get a car that can't be registered locally, because all are produced with the steering wheel on the left.

Those who missed out on an SP1 or SP2 can rest assured there is more to come.

Ferrari has confirmed it will be unleashing more Icona models, each inspired by classic Ferraris.
